Warming up the engine…

A free manual driving simulator in your browser

Clutch & Shift puts you in the driver's seat of the Kestrel Vanta GT, a fictional sporty hatchback with a six-speed manual gearbox. The engine, clutch and gears are simulated together, so the car behaves the way a stick shift does: rev it in neutral and nothing moves, let the clutch out too fast at idle and it stalls, start off in third and it bogs, drop down a gear and the revs climb while engine braking slows you.

How the clutch works here

Holding the clutch disconnects the engine from the wheels. As you let it out, it starts to grip at the biting point: the engine note drops slightly and the car begins to creep. A little gas plus a slow, steady release gives a smooth launch. On a keyboard the clutch comes up along a gentle curve when you let go of Space (or left-click in Mouse driving), and you can press the clutch again at any moment to pause the release. On touch screens you can slide the clutch pedal for fine control.

Challenges

Five short challenges score what the car actually did: First Gear (clean starts), Smooth Operator (smooth shifts and stops), Rush Hour (stop-and-go traffic), Highway Run (merge, cruise and exit) and No Stall (one stall ends the run). Shifts are judged by how closely the engine speed matched the wheels when the clutch bit, and by the jolt it caused.

Frequently asked questions

Can this teach me to drive a manual car?
It is a game, not driving instruction. It can help you understand what the clutch, gears and revs are doing, but practice in a real car with a qualified instructor.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The default is an inside-the-car view, with a compact draggable H-pattern lever immediately left of gas along the bottom edge, steering at the upper right, and clutch and brake on the left. Landscape gives more room. Optional shift buttons, a hood view and clutch assist provide an easier setup.
Can I use a game controller?
Yes. Xbox-style controllers work with analog triggers for gas and brake and LB for the clutch.
What do the difficulty levels change?
Guided releases the clutch more gently, resists stalling and suggests gears. Standard is the intended experience. Realistic has a sharper clutch, stalls more easily, brakes harder on the engine and makes you release the parking brake yourself on hills.
